Sketch and the City

Sketch and the City is a program Mike Stewart created to get people away from drawing and painting from photographs and to get them out into the real world to start making art.

Originally begun in Myeongdong (downtown Seoul) as a plein air painting event twice a month, S.A.T.C. is expanding to embrace a number of unique opportunities for making art from life. Mike is planning to bring his dozen easels to locations all over Seoul and eventually beyond...

This is an event for artist and amateurs to enjoy. No experience is required but Mike will be there to give advice as people work.

Future S.A.T.C. events include:

Sketch the Dance: at various dance studios around Seoul to capture ballet, modern, hiphop, bellydance, jazz, tap and traditional Korean dances.

Sketch the Classics: at various music schools and outdoor symphony performances.

Easels at the Palace: at various Korean historical landmarks to capture the architecture, landscape and people.

Sketch the Fight!!!: at various martial arts studios throughout Seoul to capture the fast action of taekwondo, Judo, Hapkido, Gumdo...

Sketch the Kimchi: Traditionally, twice a year Koreans (mostly housewives) get together in big groups to produce kimchi for their families.  It's quite a spectacle to see as they need hundreds of heads of cabbage for a single family.  This event will try to capture something truly Korean as we set up our easels in the heart of this amazing tradition!

Easels at the Temple: at various Buddhist Temples in Seoul to capture the architecture and ambiance.

Cherry Blossoms vs. Artists: Yeouido Park has an annual Cherry Blossom festival and our easels will be there to capture the crowds of thousands and the beauty of spring.

Easels on Namsan: Centrally located, Namsan Tower and its surroundings is the best best place to get a bird's eye view of Seoul.

Sketch them stretch: The long poses of a yoga class will provide an interesting chance to capture the limits of human flexibility.

sketch the office: Trapped in their cubicles from 9 to 5, office workers and the office architecture will give us a lot to work from.

The Han River, caught on canvas!: The Han River provides countless opportunities for breathtaking image making, but it is too rarely captured on more than "film."  It's time to change that and make some old fashioned hand-made pictures!

LIONS AND TIGERS AND EASELS OH MY!!!: Setting up easels at the Seoul Grand Park's zoo. Life drawing at its most natural.
